Maybe I’m strange, but I personally hate this day. Every year on the first of April the world seems to go crazy with “fool you” fever. Everyone seems to think that its fun and harmless and that everyone gets in on the laugh. However for me the day has always been one that’s been rather torturous and by and large evil, nothing fun what so ever.
As far back as Elementary School the day was never fun, kids playing mean spirited pranks under the guise of humor… dangerous things like pulling the chair out from behind someone as they sit IS dangerous… ever crack your head and bleed all over the floor from someone doing that? I have. Ever have someone steal your pencils and you go home and get yelled at for “losing” them then get lectured about wasting money for hours? I have. Did you have someone steal your lunch from you replacing it with a paper bag full of dog shit? I have.
So as you can see for me the day has been distinctly something that you wouldn’t enjoy. And now has I grow up the physical aspects of the pranks have ended for the most part, thankfully, however the mental aspects are ratcheted up. Its one day that just because people become such turd monkeys I almost don’t want to go online, go out to the store, or even acknowledge other people.
Perhaps you think I’m too touchy, too sensitive, or think of myself as being somehow above the people making the jokes and pranks. To this I have to say you couldn’t be more wrong. While I have always perceived myself as being intelligent (this I freely admit) I have always attempted to see the humor in a given situation. I laugh at myself frequently and even have the running joke that “I don’t need trolls in my cast… I troll myself hard enough”.
I understand that people need to blow off steam, they need to have time to be goofy, and they need to relax… however there is a time and place for it. If you don’t know how a person is going to take a joke, if its dangerous, or if it is potentially offensive, don’t do it. Prank your friends who will appreciate it, prank people who you know will understand the joke, and finally prank people who can laugh at the joke when your done.
Just don’t prank me… and if you do, I don’t claim responsibility for what my reaction to your actions will be. Remember Newton’s laws of motion, one of which clearly states: “For every action there is a equal and opposite reaction…”. But also true, you don’t know what “equal and opposite reaction” means for someone who has been tortured by this day. for as long as they can remember…
