Spooky…

Last night in my cast in the last hour or so(Feel free to go back and watch it here) I was talking about predictions for this years E3.  As I mentioned we would almost certainly be hearing more information, if only rumors, about the next XBox 360 and Playstation system.  One of the things I mentioned however, which actually upset some of my viewers as a possibility, seems to have at one point been a possibility…
Ironically, I will admit it wasn’t the company I had thought was the more likely to do it, however as I also noted, I wouldn’t put anything past the other company.  Enough being cryptic?  Alright.  In an article published this evening by Kotaku, who in turn published it from the Wall Street Journal it appears that Sony was considering going to a diskless (i.e. Download Only) console.
I know many of you are probably thinking it’s no big deal.  If Valve makes a console for Steam such as PCWorld questions.  It’s known and researchable with sites like IGN that Microsoft at least considered if not may be implementing a “no used games” system.  With digital distribution becoming so big, game developers being so reluctant to risk money on unknowns, and with indie developers such as those found on Steam of with the Indie Gala its easy to see where the appeal comes from.
Its easy to see where and how this might appeal to system makers, “Hey!  Publish your games though our market place, as well as Steam…” could be a huge draw.  In fact there are reports that Sony is looking to buy a cloud gaming service says Kotaku.  This is where things get dicey though.
For me the thought of a system not having disks, of not being compatible with used games is a deal breaker.  Once that happens, there is no turning back unless a large portion (I’d wager 70% or more) was slow, if not refused to purchase the systems until such a time that a disk drive was added, or the systems were changed to have one.  Let me spell this out as clearly as I can.
I wont purchase a system that is digital download only or will not let you play used games.
Its that simple.  But I ask myself what do you think?  As my readers would you purchase a system that doesn’t use disks?  Would you be interested in a system that you had do buy a card with a code on it to get your games?  Let me know what you think.
Edit:  Again something odd with the HTML here.  I'm going to have to possibly see about getting a different blogging program...
