Okay I already referenced Mr. Harvey once, but at the same time this seems appropriate. Late last night as I was crawling in bed ((no not literally) … badum tish) I had to move the bag that I have for my little netbook. Yeah they stink… not good for much etc. etc. etc. I keep it by my bed in case I wake up inspired or can’t sleep. Anyway moved my bag and it was oddly heavy. Upon checking out the bag (which I had moved hours earlier and noticed NOTHING odd about) I found my missing DSi and games!
I had checked out this bag, and this this pouch SEVERAL (at least three or four times) in the 6 almost 7 months that my DSi and games had been missing. WHAT THE BLOODY HELL?!? Anyway thankfully they are back with me.
And now… the rest of the story. As most of you know I’m not a huge fan of Sony. Once upon a time their products almost couldn’t be beat for the money. They had the best sound quality, the best picture quality, and on average were pioneering things that we all said “wow” about. Have a look at this headline I just read in Gizmodo. No seriously have a read I’ll wait.
See that? 5.7 billon dollar loss. Let me reiterate that, that’s BILLION … with a “b”. as in $5,700,000,000.00 dollar loss. I staggers my mind to think a company can lose that kind of money and just keep going, however as anyone who I’ve talked to in the past oh… 7 years or so can tell you, I called this
.
Sony has been acting carte blanche for a while now when it comes to their customers wants, needs and desires. The first clear sign I personally saw of it was back when they didn’t listen to an online petition for Star Wars Galaxies (look up my rant for more). When you have that large a portion of the people who play your game protesting changes you’ve made, you should at least listen to them and not say “what we are doing is in your best interest, and we aren't changing it” and lose as much as (from what I’ve been told) half your customer base.
Since dominating the market with the PS2 Sony has seemed to grow this ego of “We can do no wrong” from what I can tell, and has stopped listening to anybody. Now in some situations I can understand and perhaps even agree with this strategy, but continuing with it if for no other reason then to try to say “look we were right all along” when its clear to everyone that you weren’t is just plain foolish. I’ll be interested in seeing where this goes, but to be honest right now, unless the Sony of old resurfaces I have a feeling that the PS4 could end up being a swan song for the company.
Edit and Update: I just found this article on Kotaku. It seems that of that 5.7 billion dollar loss 49% (rounded down) or almost half... that's 2.8 billion dollars... was lost by the PlayStation division of Sony. I wonder if they are still convinced they are number one in video games, and that they have made no mistakes with the price point of the PS3, and the rumors I heard of them charging companies to make games for their system.... not to mention the whole PSP UMD problem. (Again an article in the past.
